A: International guests are encouraged to stay in the Zamalek district in Cairo. This area is very tourist friendly, full of restaurants and cafes, and close by to many of the tourist attractions of Cairo. Check out the "Where to stay" section at the top to see recommended hotels.

Q: How can I coordinate with other guests?

A: Join this whatsapp group! Make plans, get recommendations, share rides together, find other solo-travelers to share lodging, etc. Best place to ask questions.

Q: What should I wear?

In November, it will be an enjoyable 70 F or 21 C in daytime, and at night will be cooler at about 50 F or 10 C.

Getting around Cairo

There's no legal dress code, and Cairo is used to visitors, but what you wear does change how much attention you get on the street, especially for women.

Women: We'd honestly suggest covering shoulders, chest and above knees any time you're out in public. Loose, light fabrics are ideal for November, long dresses, wide trousers, a shirt thrown over a tank. Fitted is fine if you pair it with a longer top. Shorts, short skirts, low necklines and bare shoulders will draw staring and comments in busy areas like Khan el-Khalili and Downtown Cairo. We recommend keeping a light scarf with you: it covers shoulders, doubles for mosque visits, and helps with the sun.

To be straight with you: catcalling happens in Cairo regardless of what you wear. Dressing modestly reduces it a lot but doesn't eliminate it. Walking with company and using Uber make life easier.

Men: Simpler, t-shirt and long trousers works everywhere. Adult men rarely wear shorts outside resorts.

Where these social rules are relaxed: Hotels, Zamalek where guests are staying, upscale restaurants, resorts. In those areas, dress however you like.
